What could be causing my 02 Honda Civic to make a grinding noise when braking?

The brake pads (shoes) are one year old, and my husband checked them this morning. They are wearing evenly and still in very good condition. We are not on the rotors. Nothing is warped, everything looks fine. Brakes are still working properly. The grinding noise was sudden and is awful. Any suggestions?
The rear brakes are drum, and they were changed at the same time. The noise is definitely coming from the front brakes, which have shoes, not discs.
The brake pads on the front are still good. They are thick and don't look worn. They're about a third of the way worn.
It must have been a little rock stuck in there. After my husband put the tires back on, I drove around the block, braking hard and soft, and it never made any noise at all. Thanks for all your help.

Do you still have a record of the brand of brake pads used? If so, what is the brand name?

Some brands may contain metallic particles that result in metal to metal grinding noises. I've installed and used Raybestos many times which sound just fine. Try replacing your brake pads with a different brand that is not semi-metallic or does not contain metallic particles.

Good luck!
