I just bought the vehicle. Head gasket was just replaced and it was tuned up. There is no smell of gas coming from anywhere. The check engine light is not on. I am getting about 14 miles per gallon on mostly highway driving. It appears to be running quite well, but I'm getting about 1/3 less fuel economy than I expected. Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm thinking maybe the fuel filter? If you need more information, please let me know. Thank you!

So true that the fuel filter , or the tire pressure or the plugs could be faulty etc and also check the spark-plug gap to be sure it's burning the fuel properly , plus the fuel pressure regulator or air filter could cause such low mileage issues.

Remember that it's vital to go by the factory recommended spark-plugs, factory recommended tire pressures and not always do vehicles display fuel filter problems even though the fuel filter is faulty or dirty.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way the fuel pressure valve or regulating system also might seem all okay but sometimes just changing that part increases the mileage quite a bit and I'd start with checking the spark-plugs and wires and changing that fuel filter, especially if it's not been changed regularly and also be sure that the tires are up to par and that the wheels are properly balance.

Last not I'd want to try different types of gas and also check all fluid levels and make sure the transmission and engine are running within the proper pressure and temperatures ranges bec that can affect mileage too, also the exhaust can affect mileage too.

A dirty fuel filter will cause your engine to not receive enough gas and the engine will run rough, possibly sputter or not run at all,(you can usually tell by these signs). So if it runs properly, but is just sucking gas, it's far more likely to be the air filter, which will not show any apparent signs of hampering your engines performance. Other causes may include bad rings,(poor compression), bad spark plugs,(not burning the fuel efficently), or it could be something as simple as low air pressure in your tires.
