What could cause my car stereo to not have reception?

My car stereo has just light static on all AM stations and all but one FM station. The one FM station is local, I believe nearby, and its reception is somewhat faint on my stereo. The exterior antenna is extended. What could be causing this problem, and how do I fix it without taking it to a mechanic? Thank you.
