What do i need Guitar Pick-ups for?

Okay, so i just bought this new schecter diamond guitar from my friend and he's always talking about how good the emg pick-ups are. i dont even know what's it for, so can someone help me. oh, btw i just started playing guitar about a month ago so dont laugh
 
Pick ups are what picks up the sounds that you hear when the string vibrates. without pick ups your guitar wont work at all.
 
Pick ups are things that pick up vibration from the strings and transfer them to the amp..

The Better pcik ups the better sound..

Humbuckers are normally for Harder rock and Metal..
EMGs are one of the best you can find for most kind of music.
