What do I need to travel from state to state?

I plan to travel to California from South Carolina at the end of this month, and my passport just expired last month. Other than using expedited service to try and get it faster, is there something else I can use?
I was thinking of just using my permit because I don't have my license yet, will that do?

You don't need anything unless you are going to drive, then you need a valid driver's license from your home state. If you are flying, you will need a valid photo ID from your home state to pick up the tickets. Passports are only needed when traveling to countries outside the continental US, Alaska and Hawaii.

u mean by airplane ? i believe u dont need a passport to travel in just the USA however if u are traveling outside of the US u will need one try inhanced drivers licence
