I'm curious what the flies stand for in the Lord of the Flies?
I know what the Lord of the Flies stand for, I know what the Beast is, I don't need another explanation on that.

I was imagining the Flies as the boys, all trying to get to the Beast, their lives revolving around it as if they depended on it. Does this make sense to you? What do you think the flies stand for?
Thank you(:

To understand this, you have to go all the way back to Hebrew mythology. Back in those days, they referred to the devil as Beezlebub (in the middle ages, Beezlebub and the devil began to be associated as two different beings.) Beezlebub, as the king of death, was referred to as the Lord of the Flies. (Since flies were believed to be born from dead carcasses.)
Golding was trying to say that when a person is isolated from society, they lose the part of their consciousness that has the morals. They become like animals, living to satisfy their basic needs. In a sense, they had been possessed by demons.
The beast, the head, is the symbol for corruption. That is why the head is called the Lord of the Flies. It had possessed and corrupted them.

I read this book. I see the flies as the evil and salvagery (sp.) that comes of them while they are stranded. Like minions of the Lord or something. =]
