What do you look for in an anime/manga?

My friend and I are currently writing our own original story right now and I'm considering becoming a cartoonist. However, there's a lot of competition in that business and I'd like to turn our story into a graphic novel at some point. I'm wondering what kinds of anime/manga people will want to see nowadays.
So what sort of stuff do you want to see in an anime/manga?
 
I loved clannad because of what happened.. I dont wanna spoil it for anyone but i like how in one season their all happy and the next the plot gets tragic and then it just became one big twist. I guess i like anime that would make you feel like u kniw the characters and then REAL life situations come by and it just completely pulls you in to see what is gonna happen.
