What do you think about those new bikes that are crossed between a road and mtb bike?

anyone have one of these? i just heard they have a new bike thats crossed between a mtn bike and a road bike....? how do these ride and what is the purpose really? im just curious to know. Someone at the gym today told me its basically a road bike with mtb tires.
 
You may be thinking of a cyclo-cross bike. They are like a road race bike but have knobby tires for the dirt. The fad started in the early 1900's so it was way before mountain bikes were made.
