What does "family style restaurant or portions" means?

Many Italian restaurants have that "family style" and I would like to know what does it mean? Because Carmine's in New York has that and I'm planning on going with a friend, but I would like to know what that means.

It usually means that one plate of food can few 2-4 people, so it's a good idea to bring a friend or even a smoocher. XD
