What does it mean when your waitress sits down to chat with you?

I went to a cafe by myself one night and when I ordered my usual. I usually don't go by myself, but I really had a craving for what I ordered. she noticed that it was the same thing I ordered last time she waited on me. I don't usually go there, so I was surprised she remembered. As I waited for my food she said she remembered me from all the way back when we used to go to elementary school (we haven't seen each other since then till the cafe, so I didn't remember.) Then she sat down and we talked for a while. not too long though, cuz there were other customers. When I went home, I got out my old yearbooks from elementary and looked through them, and I actually found her! we weren't in the same class or anything, she was actually a grade or two above me, and we didn't really know each other then. Was she being nice, looking for a big tip, or trying to revive an old grade school crush? My cynical mind was leaning towards the second until I actually found her in my yearbooks. Now I'm not sure. What do the people of Y! answers think?

Good question I often wondered myself. It seems some restaurants ask the servers to do this or it is a thing that the server does to act like they are a friend in hopes of a good tip. It def has nothing to do with I want to get to know ya thing. Russ
