I tried reading it on wikipedia but I couldn't understand a single word since it was japanese-ish.

So what does the orange belt mean, is it a beginner grade or what?

thanks

Shotokan and most other styles ranking:

10th kyu: White belt
9th kyu: white and one stripe (a lot of people don't use the stripes though)
8th kyu: Yellow
7th kyu: ORANGE
6th kyu: green
5th kyu: blue
4th kyu: purple
3rd kyu: brown (some have strips, but I for one never used them on brown)
2nd kyu: brown
1st kyu: highest Kyu grade, (I'm this rank :D ) and is pretty good.

its a low grade.
I do wado-ryu under Higashi karate kai, founded by sensei Peter Spanton.

our belts are:
white
white with a black band around one end of the belt
yellow
orange
green
purple
brown (3rd kyu)
brown (2nd kyu)
brown with a white stripe right around the belt (1st kyu)
Black (shodan)
black belt is the last colour/shade belt you will get
but then you can get the grade
2nd dan - nidan
3rd dan - sandan
4th dan - yondan
5th dan - godan
etc etc
but yeah.. long way to go yet.
