What does the term 'blood traitor' from Harry Potter mean?

The term 'blood traitor' was used several times in the Harry Potter series, and I have no idea what it means. One example was Ron Weasley saying his family must be one of the biggest blood traitor families or something along the lines of that.
Please explain what it means ? :s
