What effect will upgrading my RAM from 1gb to 2-4gb (VISTA) have on The Sims 3?

The Sims 3 runs unbearably slowly on my PC, with graphic problems, so I've just upgraded my graphics card from a GeForce 7500LE to a 9800GT with a garuntee that it would increase The Sims 3's performance, but it hasn't improved at all. I'm wondering wether increasing my RAM from 1GB to 2-4GB will help.
