For an English assignment, I am writing a short story in the style of Edgar Allen Poe. I have a rough draft of a plot right now, and it's pretty creepy, but I want to achieve maximum scariness, so I'd like suggestions. Also, I don't want blood-and-guts gore scary, I want more psychological scares and things that would leave you, when lying in bed at night, want to make sure the closet door is closed.
So far I have a dark, stormy night, an abandoned cottage full of clocks ticking and inhuman whispers, and a disintegrating man.

So what other actual PHYSICAL aspects can I include. Think about what freaks YOU out personally and write that.

Use of foreshadow, eerie and disturbing situations, and suspense.

Clowns, Darkness, Suspense, Popouts (a random scene that will instantly scare the reader)
