It's a type of file sharing. torrents are little programs that store information that tells your computer where to go to download what you want(basically). Torrents are usually stored on a website. once you have a bittorrent client(like bittornado), download a torrent, open it, then the download of what you want starts. Speed just depends on how many people are sharing and how fast their u/l speed is, like any p2p system. I routinely d/l at full speed with popular files. for me 800 k/sec. but I probably average around200 to 300 k/sec on my downloads.
the comment thing that someone talked about is not part of the actual torrents. those are just comments on bittorrent websites that people make to describe whats in the download.
The way I see it is if you want large files like movies, whole discographies ect bittorrent is the best.

bit torrent is one of the torrent sharing file programs.
its a p2p just like bearshare,or limewire.
while i like some of the features of bittorrent, like the fact you can leave comments on a file so others can read them to see if their real or work or not before they download.
but you get alot of people who leave fake feedback so its not always right.and usually since there are multiple torrent programs running off the same network, the downloads are usually slow.
i personally prefer limewire.
if your looking for music, limewire is deffinitly the way to go,
and if use it for new movies(and old)go on limewire and type in aXXO in the video space.aXXo has alot of great movies, new and old, almost all are dvd quality, and ive only recieved one fake movie from it,very reliable.
Hope this helps.
