what is A HARD DRIVE in a DVD Recorder?

i thought HARD Drive in dvd recorder IS like a memory that i can save programmes on..so i bought a 250 GB DVD RECORDER ..now am trying to record programmes from Sky on my new DVD recorder but it says "please insert a disc first"??? i thought i can record programmes straight on my recorder without dvds discs...what is a hard drive used for then??
