What is a HotSwap Drive Enclosure and an HDD Caddy?

My cousin is giving me a HotSwap Drive Enclosure and an HDD Caddy. I don't know what they are or what they're used for.
 
hot swap mean you can unplug the drive while the power is on without damage to any hardware or data loss. hdd caddy is for a hard drive like whats in a desktop. so basically you can get any hard drive put it into the caddy slap the caddy into the enclosure, plug it into your computer, power. walla ! external hard drive. save mp3, and other data instead of your computer hard drive which should contain only your computer software.
