The overdrive in the transmission is a gearing that will lower the speed of the engine to save on fuel; always drive in OD for best fuel economy. The "low" setting would only be used when the vehicle is driven less then 10-15 mph, and may ( or may not !! ) be helpful in the snow for additional traction. You would be wise to buy a repair manual at an auto parts store for the vehicle; it will come in handy
