What is are Low and Overdrive used for on a 1999 Ford Escort?

The overdrive in the transmission is a gearing that will lower the speed of the engine to save on fuel; always drive in OD for best fuel economy. The "low" setting would only be used when the vehicle is driven less then 10-15 mph, and may ( or may not !! ) be helpful in the snow for additional traction. You would be wise to buy a repair manual at an auto parts store for the vehicle; it will come in handy
 
I recently bought a 1999 Ford Escort with 130k miles on it for $1200 as my first car.

I noticed it has a D with a box around it, which I believe to be Overdrive. What exactly is that used for? When should I stick it in Overdrive? Over 45? All the time? I'm not towing anything. What about snow?

There is also a low, same questions for that.

Unless Ford have come up with their own nomenclature, D just means "Drive", where you leave the transmission for normal driving; it'll change itself up and down as necessary.

"Low" stops the transmission changing all the way up, the equivalent to sticking to the lower gears on a manual box. This may be useful in snow or slippery conditions.
