Ares was actually not the god of war, he is the warlike personification of slaughter and blood lust. He stands opposite Athena who represented strategic warfare where as Ares represented unpredictable savagery. He is represented by Vultures, scavenging dogs, spears, and torches. He is described as being fiercely competitive and barbaric.
