What is bluetooth?

I am planning to buy a Virgin Mobile Wildcard and I heard it has bluetooth. I don't know what Bluetooth is. I heard it was some wireless network or something, I have a laptop and a router, can I surf the internet for free in my phone?

Can someone tell me what it is and what I can do with it?
