What is catback exhaust and how does it work?

I want to get a louder exhaust system for my RX8. I always hear people talking about catback exhausts and stuff. So basically, I want to know how the WHOLE exhaust system works from start to finish! And after that, i want to know what different parts of the exhaust (header, midpipe, muffler, tailpipe, tips, etc...?) there are? I want to change the muffler, but the RX8 has a weird set up and so I'm really confused if I can just by a different muffler, or if I need a new muffler and midpipe, or a new muffler, catback exhaust (whatever that is) and tailpipes, etc. I just don't know what I need. Basically, I just want to know how an exhaust system works and what different parts there are that can be replaced...but MORE THAN ENOUGH DETAIL WILL BE APPRECIATED!!! :)

After all those questions are answered, I also specifically want to know what a "CATBACK" exhaust system is.

THANKS GUYS!

Catback exhaust system is simply replacing the exhaust from the cat all the way back. You can get an Axle-Back which is basically just putting a muffler on your car from the axle back. The header is the exhaust manifold from the engine which connects to the cat. the cat helps reduce emissions from the engine, the piping takes the exhaust to the muffler, the muffler reduces the noise from the exhaust, the tip is just for looks.
