what is it with the trend in owning pit bulls?

Everyone I know whats to have a gsd lol

APBT's do make horrible protection/guard dogs. They are very human friendly.

Oh jeez, I train at the local shelter. APBT's up the yang there. I can teach an APBT sit, down and come (on release) in one visit. Any other breed? I may get lucky if they pick up sit and do it reliably the entire time. Not that those other breeds are stupid, they just take a bit longer to catch on.
 
it seems like everyone under 35 i know either has one, wants one, or knows someone who has one. do they not realize how protective/loyal a german bloodline rottweiler could be, for instance? yeah its gonna cost 5x as much, but i guess they would rather spend $500 on a new phone.i mean i could name about 30 dogs off the top of my head that are far more protective than pit bulls. why not save, research, and invest in a dog like that? are some young people so consumed with daily life, they dont stop to think before purchasing a living thing? they obviously just want the dog for 'looks'. and where do all these pit owners live? because they are banned in every apartment complex i know. they cant all possibly own or rent a house. even then, the landlord would have to approve. i mean yeah i get it, once you own the dog you're gonna love it and say great things about the breed. but it seems like thats the only dog anyone i know cares about lol...
@ michele....jokes on you, because im 28! and when i wrote 'it seems' its bc i see it around me- hence: my friends/people my age! and im not 'out of touch'. stop basing your opinion on this question. you dont know me so dont make assumptions. im simply expressing my thoughts on THIS topic. i personally would be scared straight if i saw a german rottie walking up to me, rather than a pit. and i never watch the news. i hate the news. its biased and instills fear in the vulnerable, for the country's gain.


@ nekkid...haha very true i do agree with you on the protection thing lol (: yes you should get a breed based on your lifestyle. i was just pointing out another dog with a harsh image.
 
I am insulted

I am under 35. I have NO interest in owning a pit bull. Offhand I cant think of anyone I know personally that has one (i know a few people thru dog forums, but not someone that I "know" in real life).

Nor do I have any interest in a rott. I dont care if its a rescue or imported german lines.. I have no interest in the breed. I have no need or use for a "protection" dog.. a gun will suffice, thanks.

I selected the breed I have because I researched and felt it was best for my lifestyle.
 
Dogs, unfortunately, have always been susceptible to fads and trends.

When Lady & The Tramp came out, everybody wanted a Cocker Spaniel. Then it was Dalmatians, Saint Bernards, Chihuahuas, Golden Retrievers, etc. Whenever a new movie comes out- they all want one.

Anything they see a celebrity with- everyone wants one.

Somehow, a group of people got it in their heads that the way to look "tough" was to have a Pit on a fat collar and a chain leash, and now the trend refuses to die out. (Not that I have anything against Pits, but like all other breeds, the majority of the people who own or want one, shouldn't have one.)

In my experience, I've seen Pits in apartments that strictly banned them. People never care about the rules.
 
Pit bulls are very misunderstood. Pit bulls, as other dogs, are only hostile if you want them to be! If you train a pit bull to be a big baby then they will be. Labs and Goldens are the same way!
 
Well, most people I know do not have the dogs for protection. They just like bully breeds. And there is no such breed as a pit bull. There are however, APBT's, American Pit Bull Terriers. A pit bull is just a mix of other bully breeds, therefore, it is not a breed. But anyway, a lot of people just have them because they are intelligent and loyal breeds.
 
They are a masculine breed, they look tough, are tough and not to mention very loyal and loving, and wonderful family pets. They are sadly popular for all the wrong reasons thanks to the media mostly fear. Media makes money on peoples fears, no one fears a rottweiler as they do a Pit so of course they will host Dog attacks from Pits before the Rots, poodles, evil pugs from h*ll. making people who want to be tough go for a Pit over any other breed. Very popular in city's. I do not own a Pit Bull myself, I have fostered one and met many others, I do love the breed.
 
There is no trend with pit bulls. They are the most misunderstod breed of all time. They are great and loyal pets. Finally people are starting to relize that and are adopting them more. Unfortunatpy they r a bit hard to train and that is the reason they r in shelters so often. There is no trend, they r just great and loving dogs thqt r finding homes with good people
