Ju Jutsu has throws(nage waza) basic kicking(atemi waza) weapons disarms of the 2 its the best for self defense ju jutsu (goshin jutsu =self defense) is used by all police forces in the world.
It also has from the second degree of black belt to the 4th advanced special forces moves.
It also has ground fighting(ne waza), joint locks for immobilizing and forced transport (used by the police kansetsu waza),and kobudo wich means fighting with weapons (police tonfa ,knife,bo stick, samurai sword etc.)
Karate-do is manly unarmed self defense but its focused manly on kicks and dosen`t have throws it only teaches hip throws no sacrifice throw(ex:tomeo nage) grappling for weapons disarms.

There are *many* forms of Martial Arts from all over the world. Some are mainly throws (judo), some are mainly kicks (Mui-Thai and Savate), some are mainly punching (boxing and karate), some are mainly exercise based (tai-chi).

As for knowing "lots of different martial arts"...good luck with that. Most martial arts require any where from 3-4 to 30 years of practice before you're considered to "know" that martial art... Even Masters in their 40's and older whom have studies their entire lives rarely know more than 3-4 Arts.

As for what Jiu-Jitsu and Karate "are"...they transliterate (i.e.: Literal Translation) as "Anything Goes" and "Open Hand" respectively. That does somewhat let you know what they teach.

Good Luck!
