...the first component that blows? I have an sony 75w x4 channel amp that is blown, which I am trying to fix. I know some basic electronics, I think the most advanced stuff I have done is simple 555 timer circuits or possibly an Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier. I know exactly what made the amp blow, but troubleshooting (relatively) complex circuits is above my head. I am hoping I can narrow it down to one specific component and replace it.

The amp blew due to a shorted power condition. I was in the process of uninstalling the amp in my vehicle when either 1 of 2 things happened. 1) The power wire got cut by a metal bracket in the car and shorted the (+) (power wire) to the (-) (car chassis).... or.... 2) The amp was screwed onto the chassis of the car making the amp chassis (-) and then the (+) power lead shorted to the chassis of the amp.

I believe the issue which caused the blow out is #2, shorting the (+) lead to chassis (-). Seeing as how I know that caused the blowout, does this give any indication as to what might be wrong with it? I have opened the case of the amp looking for visual signs of burnt components but I didn't see anything. My first guess was the output transistors because they close to the output, but now i'm not sure.

Given the scenario, what is most likely wrong?

Is there anyway to troubleshoot this issue without taking individual components out and testing them one by one?

Also... I don't have a scope, but I am very handy with a multifunction digital volt meter
