foods are cheap, but give a healthy diet? I have increasingly gotten irritated at looking on the Internet for nutritional information, as there is a lot of misinformation and contradictory claims. Also, food pyramids give too many options and are sometimes unclear.
What I want to know is:
What is the basic food I need to eat to stay healthy?
I don't want to buy anything elaborate or even necessarily tasty, but just need to know what basic menu I could repeat every day without fear of being unhealthy. I would love it if someone gave me a list of the perfectly nutritious meal (I would prefer something specific rather than broad) that would be easy to make and cheap to get. So, my uninformed example of an answer I would like would be something like this:
You must have 3 meals a day. All three meals must include the aggregate of:
2 bananas, 2 apples, 1 orange
2 glasses of milk, 2 glasses of juice
One portion of cheese or yogurt
2 salads containing spinach, carrot, lettuce and tomatoes
1 bowl of cereal in the morning, bread, pasta, or other carbohydrates
Eat at least one of these a day: chicken, fish, or eggs.
But basically, I don't want to know that I can eat 11 portions of spaghetti and yet still be healthy. Nutrition pyramids irritate me. I want to know what is the BARE MINIMUM that I need of each thing to stay alive and healthy. Most days I hear conflicting stories about what I should or should not eat.
ALSO IMPORTANT: what should I definitely NOT miss out on when eating. For example, if I forget to eat tomatoes one day, why is that bad? Can I go without eating tomatoes as long as I eat spinach and lettuce? Most days I don't eat the 5 portions of fruit I'm supposed to or the amount of chicken they say I should. And yet, I'm still alive and healthy. So, what is the one thing I should NEVER miss out on to ensure that I don't die just yet.
Finally, I do not eat red meat. I need to know the perfect 'menu' that I can repeat while traveling, so that I spend very little money, but yet am not going to cause myself to not be mentally alert or to later have health problems. I frankly don't care if that means all I eat are sprouts. Actually, it would be great to know if I could remain healthy if I just ate sprouts, cheese and ham sandwiches and fruit. The more nutrition encapsulated by one item, the better, especially if it's cheap.
