What is the best car/SUV for less than $7000?

I'm looking to buy my first car but only have about $7000 to spend after insurance and all other expenses. Looking at either a small SUV or car that looks half descent and gets at least about 25mpg hwy. Engine size doesn't matter all that much although a v6 would be nice.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Note: Would prefer something newer than 2000 and with no more than about 100,000 miles depending on the manufacturer. In terms of cars I would prefer something somewhat sporty. Also I want something with relatively low repair costs...I love the VW Jetta and Audi A4 but know i couldn't afford the repair bills if something went wrong on them.
 
Hyundai Santa Fe V6 or Tucson

hint: avoid used VWs, buy New. (08/09)

avoid Audi new or used.
 
If I had $7000 to spend on a car, I'd buy an early 90's big Buick for $1500 and then I'd have $5500 in the bank.

That's about the "best" car all around you can buy. They last forever, and get 30 mpg on the highway, and if you do actually wear a part out, the parts are cheap.
