I would recommend innova, canidae, or timberwolf organics. Innova and timberwolf organics are quite expensive, but canidae is very affordable and comparitive in price to all the crappy foods at Petsmart.

You will need to go on their websites to see what stores carry those foods, as they are not sold in Petsmarts or Petcos. If you have a pet supplies plus near you, they carry them.

Diamond Dog Food scored pretty low on the ratings that the AKC did on dog foods. They rated both premium and commercial grade foods and the highest score was Merrick Wilderness; Canidae also scored very high. I posted the entire list yesterday on another question about dog foods. Its worth a look.

I have been feeding my golden Hundenflocken since she was 2 months, in the morning mixed with milk, egg (organic from our chickens) and ricotta cheese. For her lunch and dinner, she gets the Hundenflocken with homemade beef soup. Lots of veges like green beans, carrots, celery, sweet potatoes. (She always picks out the sweet potatoes first). Because you have a large breed dog, be sure they get enough calcium for good bone development. My brain has gone blank at the moment as to the other thing we add to her food for her joints...if it come sback into my head I will add it to this post. I suggest you read "Foods our Pets Die For" for receipes and what foods to avoid. I think you will be horrified to learn what goes into most standard brand dog foods.

We use Canidae all life stages. If you ask 10 people this question you'll probably get 10 different answers. You want to look for a food that doesn't have a lot of fillers. My pup has itching problems (i think she's allergic to corn or wheat - fillers in a lot of pet food). We just switched her to the canidae. You can go to this site to get a load of inforative information about dog food. www.dogfoodanalysis.com

Any high-quality, premium food. A high quality dog food will list a specific meat source as it's first ingredient, for example deboned chicken or lamb meal. Meat by-products are NOT a good meat source, as the by-products usually consist of the scraps (ie fat, skin, etc.). You also want to look for a food that does not use corn gluten or wheat as a filler. Basically, any food you can purchase in a grocery store or Walmart is junk. A few of the brands that I highly recommend are Natural Balance, Canidae, California Naturals, Wellness, Innova, Solid Gold, and Merrick, to name a few. Petco carries a couple of those brands, but your best bet would be a feed store or a small local pet store. A good online store is PetFoodDirect.com. I highly recommend the websites I've recommended as sources. Ever since I started feeding my cats and dog premium food, they're coats are shinier, they're eyes are clearer. I can truely see a difference.
