What is the best handheld camcorder?

I'm looking into handheld camcorders and would like to know which ones are reliable. I plan on using it to make good quality short films and will use video editing software so it has to be compatible with that sort of use. What are some options (preferably under $500)

I like the Sanyo Xacti VPC-PD2BK I've heard its a really good camera.
