I also don't want to spend too much on it for my first DSLR so any recommendations would be good :)

To be blunt there no semi-pro cameras that aren't SLR... there just aren't.

There are some very nice "bridge" cameras out there but they're by no means in a professional line.

Pros, and I happen to still be semi pro, pick SLR cameras because of their excellent quality and choice of control and lens options.

If you want this level of camera you're going to have to pay for it.

DSLRs don't earn money by themselves so they can't go am, pro, semi-am, semi-pro or pro-am. It's their owners that deserve those labels. Any camera can be used to make money. The dSLR (or SLR in general) is not a necessary requirement. It just happens that the most flexible camera around is a dSLR and that is what most pros and serious ams use.

Basically all dSLRs are the same. If budget is your primary concern, just target the cheapest model available at the moment and live with it. If you have certain features that you can't live without then the choices would be narrowed down further. If you're just starting, you could as well just buy what you can afford now and use it till kingdom come or until it breaks. The camera, not the kingdom.
