What is the best way to book an international trip with multiple destinations?

I am a US citizen currently in the middle east and would like to come back to Texas with a few days to check out Paris in between. A flight from here to Houston was about $1200 while one from Paris to Houston was $1800 even though it's twice as close! Someone please advise me.
