What is the best way to get my 3 1/2 month old puppy to not whine and howl...

...when in his crate? I'm in the process of crate training my new German Shepard Mix, and so I put him in the crate at night while I sleep. Last night, he was whining and howling like crazy and wouldn't stop. I'm wondering what the best way to get him to stop is, because I know it's a bad idea to take him out after he's been whining and howling like that.
 
go buy a windup clock that ticks...wrap it in a towel and put it in his crate at night. the ticking will simulate his mother's heart and will keep him quiet and comfortable..

He misses his litter mates.

1) Give him a "litter mate". Stuff an old sock with a bunch of socks rather than throwing them out. Tie the end up and let him snuggle it in his crate to sleep with.

2) wear a t-shirt to get your scent on it, and then put it into his crate for him to snuggle up to it with YOUR scent on it.

At his age, he's lonesome for his littermates and doesn't understand why he was taken from his mama. -!-
