What is the best way to load divx / xvid codecs on an XP / Vista / 7 machine

(without side-effects)? I have found any number of divx / xvid codec packs via google, but every time I have loaded one, it tried to hijack much of the system and install WAY too much software. Each time, it tried to load 2-3 different modules / toolbars into the browser, to load in extra players, to set their site to my home page, to install various modules, etc - and I'm unsure just how much of this is genuine malware, as opposed to simply "nuisance-ware".

I'd like to know which pack would be the "cleanest" installation, with the least amount of superfluous crap loaded in to the system. I don't mind 1-2 little things which I can deselect, but the ones I've found are a lot more cumbersome.

Also, where to download? Do you have links?

I will be installing on someone else's laptop, so the cleanest version possible is important.

Whenever you download anything that you're going to install in your machine, right click on its Zip or rar file or on it's icon if it self-installs, and run virus and spyware scans.

WOT (Web of Trust) also provides a handy (and free) tool to check websites for hidden malware. You can also check any website for safety in the "Check A Website's Reputation" boxes at both the top and the bottom of the page by typing its URL in the box.
