What is the most practical, safe, and reliable SUV for an athletic person?

My boyfriend will be buying a used SUV this summer and I'm the researcher so I would like to find out what would be best for him.
We both snowboard so it has to be 4 wheel drive and spacious
He wants something he can tow his boat with
Comfortable
He also wants fuel efficient but I told him an SUV is best for him, which won't give him fuel efficiency
I would like him to have something that is safe, reliable, and will last.

He will be purchasing something used, preferably no older than maybe 2005?
Any ideas?
 
I have a 2006 Chevy Suburban with the VORTEC engine. I pull a 10,000lb travel trailer and bounce around town with a utility trailer. My fuel efficiency is 18.5 mpg without the trailers and about 16 mpg with the trailers. I have had the Fords and Jeeps, and they have restrictions too numerous to list. Since you will be in the colder environments (snowboarding) you may want to look for the heated seats - best investment I've ever made.
