What is the purpose of the SUV?

If you have multiple people you need to drive back and forth then your going to need something big.
 
An alternative for people who like to drive sitting up higher than in sedans.
 
To haul around a lot of people without driving an embarrassing minivan. SUVs are the bomb!
 
SUV's don't always have 3rd row seating like vans but because of their truck like platform are use for towing and four wheel drive applications while still offering the creature comforts of a car like a roomy back seats and covered storage. Where as a truck usually has a smaller back seat if any at all and offers no covered storage.
