Dog comes to farm.
Boy falls in love with dog.
Dog gets rabies.
Boy shoots dog.

The story is an allegory for a boy's passage into manhood. Travis's father must leave his family to earn money because his Confederate money is now worthless due to circumstances beyond his control. Travis must perform his duty as a man by shooting Yeller. Life is hard even for good and honest men, and men must make hard choices.

The antagonist is not personified but it is hardship that must be confronted - specifically rabies toward the end.
