what is the towing capacity on a 1998 GMC Sonoma, 4 cylinder, 2.2?

i've been told 500 pounds, and i've been told 2000 pounds. this is make or break for the car i want to buy! will it tow up to 2000 pounds?
 
In the front cubby hole there should be a rating. My 1998 6 cylinder GMC Sierra is 1500 LBs.
 
Not with a 2.2. Most likely the towing capacity for that vehicle is 1500 lbs. A Sonoma is going to have good enough brakes for towing 2000 lbs-which is actually the most important thing-but the engine and transmission with a 2.2 liter 4 cylinder isn't going to have enough torque to pull you up a boat ramp with a loaded boat and trailer rails full of water.
