I got this and it is hinged with criss cross patterns on the pan part. Both sides are the same. The picture is a little bad since it is still in the plastic. But what is it and how do I use it?

It is more of a teflon coated like I think, def not cast iron.

I thought waffle maker at first but I should have mentioned that the squares portrude not indent.

It looks like a simple version of a Pannini press to me. A Pannini press is used to make grilled sandwiches. You just make any type of sandwich that you think would be good grilled. Use a hearty bread like sourdough, foccachia or ciabatta. Rub a small amount of olive oil on the outside of the sandwich (both sides), place in the press, keep it closed tightly and put over direct heat (stovetop or grill). Let it "cook" on on side and turn over. Makes delicious hot sandwiches!

It makes grilled cheese over a fire or grill.

My Grandma had a tool that looked something like that.

She would put in waffle or pancake mixture and hold it over
the fire until it was done.

She would make a few and allow them to cool.

Once cooled she would use it like bread, putting ice cream between the slices, that was my first ice cream sandwich.

We also ate them with syrup or just as they were.

It is a PIE IRON.You can make grill cheese sandwiches or whatever hot sandwich you like in the fireplace with this or grill over a camp fire with it.You can also get them with a double pie iron part to make 2 sandwiches at once.
