what is watts in amplifier and speakers?

in amplifier it is mentioned 300 watts and speaker also same. what is watts in amplifier and speaker?
 
A watt is a unit of energy , so for example a 100 watt light bulb will give twice as much light as a 50 watt bulb ,but use twice as much energy , the same applies to the amp and speakers , a 300 watt amp is capable of supplying sound to the value of 300 watts of energy , very loud in a confined area btw , but not that good say in a concert hall
 
It's a way to measure the power output of the speakers. More watts, more power.
