I am interested in taking Shorin-Ryu Karate. It is an Okinawan Karate and looks good from what I've seen on the internet.
But, those of you who have or do take Karate (of some kind if not Shorin Ryu), did you ever learn how to defend yourself against a grappler?
Did you learn to defend against a takle (shoot) to the legs like a wrestler does?
Did you learn how to defend yourself if a grappler mounts you and pins you on your back?
What if he got your back on the ground and was raining punches on the back of your head?
I like Karate but, I don't want it to be useless on the ground. It seems on the surface that Karate is weak on the ground. But, that is mainly from early MMA fights were pure (they didn't crosstrain in grappling arts like BJJ back then) Karateka were taken down and beaten. In a streetfight there are more opportunities (I hope).
So, did your Karate dojo teach you any defenses? If so what where they? What was your style of Karate?
