What kind of hiking/backpacking races exist?(if any)?

I don't want the typical run. I am looking for a race that takes you through the wilderness where true strategy comes into play. For example, you might have to decide when to set up camp for the night or press forward to make better time. Does such a race exist? If so, can I do it solo or do you need to have a team? Am a required to take a safety course or other training to participate? Thank you!! ( I have seen adventure racing but I am more interested in just hiking)
 
Go into the army infantry and when you go for your expert infantryman's badge there is a 12 mile march. To pass the task, you'll need to run in full combat gear with a 45lb rucksack and rifle. Though it's not a race against your fellows per say, it turns into one around 9 miles in.
