Hello. I'm planning on buying an '04 Subaru Forester this spring. I'm trying to decide between the standard motor and the XT (turbo). Edmund's suggested that the standard gets roughly 21mpg, while the XT gets 19mpg. I will definitely be getting a manual tranny. Also, Edmund's said that the XT requires Premium gas.

So to those that have these cars... What kind of milage do your really get? And is it really necessary to fill the XT with Premium gas?

Thanks!

Cant help you with the mileage part, but yes the turbo motor absolutely needs premium. On a non turbo motor the knock sensor will cause the ECU to retard the timing and you will lose a bit of power but the engine will be fine. There is not as much leeway on a turbocharged engine, the cylinder pressures are higher, you will get some preignition and shorten the engine life considerably if you go with regular.
