Ok on fight science it said that western boxing has the stronger punch. I'm guessing they have the best punch to. Takwondo probably have the best kicks. BJJ seem to have the best ground fighting.
Now what nobody seem to have focus on which one have the best defence.
Unarmed: defence against punching(any type of punch including upper cut),kicking, kneeing, elbow garbing.
Now armed: defence against, knives, bats, weapons similar to a tire iron.

Alsodefencee against multipleopponentss.

Out of yourexperiencee or knowledge which martial arts seem to be good in each area aboved.

i second the great answer pugpaws has given you. and also I personally believe there is no such thing as a "block" because every "block" IMO is either a strike, or a redirection, parry etc.

Unarmed I think Muay Thai because of its need to block elbows, punches, kicks, and knees effectivly.

Against weapons I think Krav Maga because it is designed for self defence against multiple, single, armed, and unarmed opponents

There is no proof that any art has the best punch, kick, ...etc. It is always how well someone cane do those things, not the art he learned it from. Besides the best technique is not the most powerful that matters. what matters is if you can make the technique work when you need it. Any technique that you can use for self defense knowing that you have developed it enough for it to be reliable, and works consistently for you. In other words any technique that is risky and may fail you in a real life or death situation should not even be attempted in a real fight.

All forms of martial arts have very strong potential for defense it depends on the participants proficiency. You must practice to hone your guard. Some MMA were specifically designed for practical defense. I take Ketsu-Ka Karate which takes the practical defense aspects of aikido, savate, karate, jujitsu, and judo in order to provide an efficient and quick to learn martial art for self defense. Aikido means "the Way of harmonious spirit" and its designer created it specifically to produce an art that people could use to defend themselves while protecting their attacker from injury.

as for unarmed vs. an armed combatant your best bet is to run or to take the weapons power away. If you can escape that is your best bet but if you must retaliate then control the hands of the assailant and you now have control of his weapon. If it is a longer weapon such as a katana or a bat getting in close will reduce the damage you may suffer but ultimately a well honed katana will shred you to ribbons just at the slightest touch.

Most all martial arts styles use the same basic blocking techniques as the other styles do. But some styles are more defensive than others. Hapkido,Aikido use flowing blocking techniques while Karate,Taekwondo styles use traditional strong blocks. It all comes down to the individual. SuaKaow
