what rpm should my snowmobile idle at?

i have a '70 something artic cat el tigre its a 500 cc engine and has the usual 2 pistons but what rpm should it idle at? right now it idles at 2500 rpms and will move at about 5500 to 6000 and i think that if i put a new belt on it that will help it move at more of 4000 but what worries me is it idles at 2500 usually..unless i like get off and pick up the rear or front end then it will idle up and i dont want it to idle fast enough to go and drive off without me. just need some help
