I have an essay due, and its a reading based essay. It has to be 500 words and I am no good at writing essays. What should my introduction include?
I have to respond to two separate passages that entail the same focus. Veblen's views of competition is the main focus and the second passage is two students discussing such views.

The introduction should give a brief explenation about the main points of your essay. Dont go too into detail just give a brief explenation.

first, what is your topic?!?
your intro should include something catchy, a few facts on your topic and then a transition into the body of the essay.
500 words is easy. what I do to get an idea of how long that 500 words would be is write a couple short sentences and then copy/paste them into a word document. Keep pasting them in until it says there are 500 words. now you have an idea of how long that the essay has to be.
also, what kind of teacher do you have? is he/she really nice? do you talk a lot with them? my English teacher and I chat online all the time so she knows me. so in my papers I sometimes stall by giving my opinion and then that like 10 less words that I have to write.
those are just a few tricks so that writing that paper will be that much less painful.
HAVE FUN AND DO WELL!

A basic outline of what you are going to be writing about. State the situation and what it actually is you will be talking about.
An introduction only needs to be brief, and isn't worth that many marks, so I wouldn't worry about it to much.
But you need something that will interest the person marking it, and to tell them straight away what they're looking at. The main apart is there to expand on what you have said in the introduction.

It depends on the subject, if its reading i guess its on a novel. We cant really help you unless you tell us what the essay is about.

Say for example, the question is: "in the novel, spongebob sqaurepants how is his love for the krusty krab shown" (lol)

you'd start by saying

in this essay i am going to discuss the points of why spongebob loves the kk and fry cooking.

then give some history on the novel (or main focus of the question)

sorry i couldnt help much because i have no idea what its about!

and the introduction is important, it gives your essay a good starting point. Without a good structured essay (inc. intro and conclusion) you wont get many marks.

Good luck i hope you get A+
