I live in Victoria and I've seen the damage that the fires have done. It is expected that the death toll may rise to 300.
Every ten or so years there are major bush fires (although never as bad as the 2009 fires) that take lives. So what is being done to prevent his from happening again in another five or ten years?
Bunkers are an option that many people are looking at. With bushfires as strong as these, nothing really has a chance of surviving above the ground in the path of the fire.
The building regulations are another issue. People should not be allowed to build wooden houses in the middle of the bush but they do.
Another problem during the fires was the ‘stay and protect or leave early policy’ which is now being reviewed. It gives people hope and false belief that they can save their homes, when in reality they have no idea of what they’re up against. If they are going to stay then they need somewhere safe to take shelter if they can’t control the fire. People should also not be allowed to stay if they are not educated in protected their homes.
