What should I bring on my trip to Costa Rica this summer?

I want to be prepared. I am going with my college this July on a trip to LaSelva Biology Station in Costa Rica this summer for a biology class and field photography class. I know July is one of the rainiest months in Costa Rica so I am already in the market for a poncho. I also plan to buy binoculars, a better camera, and hiking shoes. Any suggestions for anything else? What kind of camera/binoculars should I buy? (please keep in mind that Im a college student and don't have thousands of dollars to throw around... I will be saving but I think the absolute max i can go on a camera is $6-800!)

Any and all suggestions are appreciated but the one that answers all the questions gets the points. :)

Camera suggestion: Canon Powershot SX10IS

It has a 20x zoom and 10.4mp. I just bought this camera for wildlife / hiking photography and I'm loving it. It's not too heavy and I can zoom in on butterflies without scaring them and monkeys that are way up in the trees. Even more exciting is that it is between $300 - $400. I got mine on Amazon for $329.00.

Yeah, a poncho will be good along with waterproof hiking boots and be sure to bring extra socks. I may re-wear the same pair of dirty shorts for a couple of days, but the socks get changed out at least once a day. Especially when it's rainy - you want to avoid blisters and chafing.
I haven't been in July but I was there in June. It only rained once a day for about an hour. By reading other peoples posts, I've learned that by September its a lot of rain, but I think in July you'll still be pretty comfy.
