What should I do about fostering kittens?

I recently quit volunteering at my local animal shelter because I was in need of a job that paid actual money. As much as it breaks my heart I really need a steady income to pay for gas. As a high school student I feel like I have little to no power to help animals (mainly kittens/cats until I'm older) inside of my home. I recently came across two stray kittens that I would love to take to the vet to get fixed and then proceed to find suitable homes for them, but my mother will hear nothing of it. Nor will my grandparents, who are finally sick and tired of me dragging over puppies and kittens to their house after all these years.

My friends can't help me out because most of them don't care for cats, plus their parents would say no in a heartbeat. I need to get creative and try to think of some possible way I can continue to help stray animals. The local shelters don't take in cats unless you pay $100 for each animal (to cover the cost of the surgery and their food). Even then they could get sick due to all the diseases at the shelter and die. And I am in no way prepared to drop kittens off to their death at the pound.

Any ideas? I'm so lost right now, any help is welcomed.
