What size fish tank do i need for five goldfish?

The science fair is coming up and my project is on goldfish. The requirements are that for each subject (in plants and animals) requires that i have 5 test subjects. So i need to buy two tanks for ten goldfish. (Five per tank). So can anyone tell me what size tank i need?

Unfortunately, using goldfish would not be very practical for a school project. They grow much too large for smaller sized aquariums and produce a lot of waste. For 5 fancy goldfish the usual recommended minimum is 60 gallons with heavy filtration. This allows room for them to grow and their waste to dilute and properly be broken down. The comet "feeder" goldfish require even more space because they grow even larger.

Instead you could get away with two separate 10 gallon systems with 5 guppies each. Beware though, guppies breed prolifically so choose either males or females.
