The situation: Today in drama class we had a new student. (This is college level) And someone made a joke "Yay! Now we get to try out the new very painful initiation!" so going along with the joke I said, "Too bad I didn't bring my bull whip today." I meant it in a sexual way. The whole dominatrix thing, you know? The new guy is a cutie! I thought that I was being sexy by sneaking that in or something.

Only one person heard me and when she did she through me the angriest glare I've ever gotten in my life. At first I didn't understand why she looked at me like that but then I realized why. The new student is african american and it probably sounded like a prejudice/racist remark. After I realized that I was horrified! I should have clarified right then and there but I didn't know what to do or say to make up for it and to show that I wasn't racist. If I had thought about it a little bit more I wouldn't have said it because it would be misunderstood.

Now my problem is that this girl seems to like to be "social" and talk about people in class. She's already done that several times. I'm mostly afraid that she'll tell the new kid and he'll think that he I'm evil and hate him because of his race when I don't hate him at all. And that everyone else in class will think that I'm racist too. If anything I said it because I wasn't racist, I wasn't thinking about anything racist! If I'm anything I'm a pervert... Not that I am but I did mean for it to be taken in a sexual way (it was just a joke and not serious).

Now everything is tense for me and I'm just waiting for the bomb to hit and everyone to hate me. I would just go up to the girl and tell her the truth but she wouldn't believe me. She'd just think I was trying to cover up the truth. And I can't just go up to the guy and apologize for something he doesn't even know anything about... yet. WHAT DO I DO? I don't want anyone to feel like they are discriminated against. And I don't want people to get the wrong idea about me!

Lol. I would just tell the girl that it was a joke gone wrong and if you feel the need to apologize if she was offended, do.

I completely understand what you are going through. I have a lot of white friends who say a lot of crazy things in general and the issues of race isn't any different. If they say anything that is border line and no one laughs then they figure it out, but because my friends and I have been knowing them for years we know that they aren't being racists but just them silly selves. At some point we all say offensive things (I've put my foot in my mouth plenty) and to those we know its ok, but for the ones we don't we should at least attempt to clarify what we meant so that no one misunderstands character.

You and I have the same sense of humor.

There's nothing you can do. Sorry. If people don't understand you, they won't make good friends anyway.

I'm friends with a bunch of nerdy losers and I love 'em to death. Stick to what you know.
