I have a 7 year old barrel horse that runs barrels, I run him once or twice a week throughout the summer. He is a very hard runner and I need some advice on what to feed him. He is a very active and hyper horse and it is hard to keep weight on him without getting him to juiced up with protein that makes him to hot headed and then he doesn't pay attention and tries to run away (he is a trained horse and does not need to be slowed down or more training he is just a VERY high strung horse) I work at a feed store and can get almost any type of feed or supplement. I would like to find a feed or any kind of supplement that will keep weight on him, not make him to hot, and give him the vitamins and minerals he needs for an active horse. Or if there is any kind of supplement that would work for calming him down without taking his speed away, just take the edge off. I have tried thia-cal, it didn't work, and I gave him a shot of Fluphenizine (sp?) it is a 30 day tranquilizer and it worked but I have heard about some bad side effects to it. So I am open to any suggestion about feed, supplements, shots, or home remidies for him. thanks
Oh also last year his airway got constricted because he had bad allergies and his throat swelled up and he had a hard time breathing unless he was running full blast or staying calm. My vet gave me some Dexamethasone (Dex) for it and it helped. So if anyone knows any remidie or feed that would help his allergies that would be great also.
